Greece Showcases Smart Cities, Smart Islands, and Innovation at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2025

Barcelona, November 21, 2025 — Greece’s participation at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2025 in Barcelona marked a defining moment for the country’s innovation landscape, presenting its first National Innovation Pavilion and a powerful vision of collaboration, sustainability, and digital transformation.

Through the Greek Innovation Pavilion, organized by Enterprise Greece and the Pleiades Innovation Ecosystem, under the auspices of the Ministry of Digital Governance, the country demonstrated real-world smart city and island initiatives that connect technology with tangible local impact.

Representing Greek cities, islands, and regions — including Kalamata, Chalki, Palaio Faliro, Vari–Voula–Vouliagmeni, Larissa, and the Regions of Western Greece, Attica, and Central Macedonia — the Pavilion spotlighted Greece’s growing reputation as a collaborative and forward-looking innovation hub.

At the Pavilion, Greece unveiled a series of milestone initiatives underscoring its commitment to smart transformation and cross-sector collaboration. The Port of Patras Innovation Hub, created by the Patras Port Authority and the Pleiades Innovation Ecosystem, will transform the Port of Patras into a globally recognized, data-driven hub for sustainable and smart port innovation. The Pleiades Energy Working Group, developed in partnership with the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO), KEON Energy, UNIWA, ICCS – NTUA, and the municipality of Chalki, unites cities, companies, and researchers to accelerate Greece’s energy transition through applied innovation. Meanwhile, the new PalaioFaliro.Lab initiative marked the beginning of the Palaio Faliro Master Plan — a bold effort to reimagine the city’s future and create a lasting legacy of smart urban development. The unveiling of the new Pleiades brand platform — “Your Ecosystem for Innovation” — introduced an evolved identity and the Urban Living Lab model, reinforcing Pleiades’ role as the hub where ideas move from concept to real-world impact.

Through fireside chats, case talks, and networking sessions, members and partners of the Pleiades Innovation Ecosystem — including EmDot, IntelliSoft, Infinite Informatics, iQnovus, Geospatial Enabling Technologies, Chalki.Lab, Top Vision, Omnico, and Cyclefi — presented solutions in smart mobility, AI, digital twins, ports, energy systems and more. The Pavilion also emphasized cross-border collaboration between Greece and Spain, supported by the Embassy of Greece in Madrid and Mr. Pantelis Gassios, Counsellor for Economic & Commercial Affairs and Head of the Economic & Commercial Office in Madrid, whose leadership has strengthened bilateral partnerships and technology exchange between the two nations.

«Enterprise Greece is honoured to promote this initiative, which showcases how Greece is emerging as a dynamic partner in the global smart-city transformation,» said Dr. Marinos Giannopoulos, CEO of Enterprise Greece S.A. «Our participation at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2025 is not just about visibility; it anchors Greece’s commitment to international collaboration, positions our country as a testbed for innovative urban solutions, and connects our cities, regions, and technology companies with strategic partners and investors from around the world. By bringing together municipalities, scale-ups, research centres, and utilities under one national umbrella, we highlight the unique strengths of Greece’s regions and the talent of our people – from digital public services to sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and data-driven urban planning.»

“This year’s participation proved how Greece is turning innovation into impact — connecting local vision with global collaboration,” said Antonis Cassano, President of Pleiades.

“The Greek Innovation Pavilion reflected the strength and unity of our ecosystem,” added Spiros Mazarakis, Managing Director of the Pleiades Innovation Ecosystem. “Together with our members, we’re driving AI-powered innovation, Smart Islands, Smart Cities, and Blue Growth through collaborative pilots, smart labs, and real-world partnerships.”
