A city-scale innovation system

Kalamata is at the forefront of Greece’s participation in the European NetZero Cities initiative, working toward climate neutrality by 2030.

Kalamata.Lab was established to support this transition — as a structured innovation system connecting the city’s priorities with real-world implementation.

Developed through collaboration between the Municipality of Kalamata, the Development Organization of Kalamata Municipality S.A. “Sustainable City,” and Pleiades, the lab operates as a dynamic hub where public services, research, businesses, and the local community come together to design and test solutions.

Its role is to bridge strategy and action — enabling the city to move from planning to measurable outcomes across key sectors.

Building the foundations for transformation

Kalamata.Lab focuses on creating the systems, infrastructure, and collaboration needed to deliver long-term urban innovation.

  1. Kalamata.Lab Innovation Center

    Establishment of a dedicated innovation hub bringing together municipal services, academia, businesses, and the local community to co-create and test solutions.

  2. Urban Data & Digital Infrastructure

    Development of data-sharing frameworks and digital systems to support transparency, interoperability, and evidence-based decision-making.

  3. Climate Neutrality Use Cases

    Design and deployment of pilot use cases addressing key urban challenges, including water management, energy, mobility, and environmental monitoring.

  4. Smart Specialization Strategy

    Implementation of a place-based innovation strategy that builds on Kalamata’s strengths to identify growth opportunities and address local challenges.
